What's that saying about ass-umptions and opinions?
********************************************
Please People, hear me out. Posted: 9 hours ago Ok, this is going to be long, I will divide it into sections. It is IMPORTANT THAT YOU READ EVERYTHING.
Josh lied about Steam
We have 0 proof for this and I will explain why this is getting more and more unlikely. But before I do, I must apologize and give you a bit of Information. I am a American, I live in Germany and have lived there for over 10 Years. English is my Native Tongue, I just don't get much practice with writing. I speak, read and write both Languages fluently. I apologize because I helped spread the Rumor that Josh confirmed no tie-in with Steam.
Most of you never read the original Article this was stated in, that is because it was a Article from the German Fansite codinfobase.de. I had until shortly, no reason to not believe them. However, they have contradicted themselves. In the original Article they stated that Josh had in no way hesitated to tell them their would be no tie-in with Steam. Today, the gave out a new Article, a Review of the Information given out on Sept. 1st. Now, all of a sudden, they are saying that Josh had only vaguely answered the Question on Steam. There are neither Videos nor Voice-Recordings documenting this supposed Interview, all we have is their Word, like I said, they have already contradicted themselves. The rest of the Article today is also filled with false Information, for instance they stated that nummerous Killstreaks are Perks, this is not a simple Typo, they did it several Times. Anybody else that gave out this Information, either had it from them, or from me and others that translated it and spread the Word. I can not recall Josh ever stating this to another Source. Why would they lie you might ask? Well, since MW2 they have been, like many, very biased towards the series and ahve started concetrating more on MoH and Battlefield, these Games had no Place at all on their Website before. This could have been a retaliation move or a misunderstanding, if the Interview ever even took place. DO NOT BLINDLY BELIEVE THEM.
Dedicated Servers, Steam and Modding
Now, another Source is Josh Peckler, he is the owner of planetcallofduty.com he is also not a official source, however, he is the one that started all of this Info on Steam, the Servers and what influence people deducted it will have on Modding. Personally, I actually do tend to believe him, but I have yet to see a official source say any of what he has said to be true. Everybody else stating these things got it from him. Alot of you are also misinformed on what he alledgedly found out. He claims that his Info is from PCdev.
Ok, so what we have heard from him is that the Game will have dedicated Servers, no Public Server Files and that Gameservers.com will be the sole Provider. We also know about the Steam Tie-In and VAC from him. However, while I believe it and consider that people should believe it, this is to my knowledge still unconfirmed. So, o what behalf are alot of People misinformed? Alot of people are assuming that no public Files will mean no Modding. First of all, Modding means nothing more than configuring what is already in the Game, it can be added upon, but doesn't have to be to be considered Modding. That means, simple config editing is already Modding. According to Josh Peckler, from a Interview with him that can be heard on Bash and Slash, PCdev stated that, while the Files are not Public, they will still be editable, meaning, you will still have access to them, likely either over a specific Tool or over the Provider. That means, even without ModTools, defacto Modding will be possible from Day 1. PCdev also always stated things like Competitive Mods. These are no more then editited Configurations of the Game, like what Weapons are allowed, what damage they do, time for a Match and so on. Sadly, many people are confusing Mods with conversions. A Conversion would be for example the Galactic Warfare Mod for CoD 4. As of now, this will most likely not be possible. But, it could be. Even if the Data is more or less locked down, with working together with Treyarch, you could still get such Mods, this could be done with Patching. It would be selective for the Server and could then likely be Streamed to the Client, basically like in the past, it would just have to run through Treyarch first. Steam also does NOT hinder Modding.
But still, only 1 Provider sucks!
Truely it would. But, like I said we don't really know if this is true. Why would Gameservers.com lie? Well, if this is a lie (I don't think it is) keep in Mind that any Press is good Press. They could be fined for stating something like this if it isn't true, but the Info is out there, less people will hear about it if it isn't true, so they will in any Case be making more Money then they would be losing. Above that, we should all know that exclusive means nothing. Microsoft also always claims something is exclusive, in lot's of Cases it is merely a timed exclusivety. I could imagine this being the Case aswell and they still wouldn't be lying. They would just be selectively telling the Truth.
People however are mainly worried about pricing. Before I dig deep into that, the currently named prices are very reasonable.15$ for a 18 Slot Ranked Server, 0.50$ for a Slot on a Unranked Server. thats a good Price. So people argue that the Prices will rise by alot considering BC2 and MoH costing about 4 Times as much. Keep in Mind, both of those Games use the Frostbite Engine which is more Hardware Hungry then the CoD Engines. So, less Hardware is needed for a CoD Server, therefore, they are cheaper.
Even if they are the long-term exclusively providing the Servers, Treyarch and Activision aren't dumb. They surely have a Contract with them stating atleast 1 of the following:
- Prices may not be risen - Prices may only be risen a certain Amount, like perhaps 5% (which would still be under 20$ for a Ranked Server) - Exclusivity is a timed offer
Not following something like that would be a breach of Contract and allow them to go to other Providers. They also surely know that Gameservers cannot handle this Worldwide, currently atleast. The Game doesn't release for other 2 more Months, that means they can still expand their Service alot in that Time, or, they may also be using Regional Providers as Partners.
But that would be a Monopoly!!!
No it wouldn't. A Monopoly regards the thing on Top, in this case, Servers in General and Video Games in general. Aslong as you can get Servers somewhere else (even if they can't play Black Ops) it isn't a Monopoly. I don't want to go into huge Detail here. But just think about it, if this were a Monopoly, Activision and every other Company would already be a Monopoly for holding a Brand Name. Thats not how it works. Even if this were a Monopoly, Laws are not the same internationally and I doubt every Country even has Laws like these (In China for instance Plagarism isn't really a Problem). But, like I said, they wouldn't be violating any Law, atleast not with a Monopoly.
What about the Files?
Well, the Files generally are a ''Problem'' depending who you are. Most People don't Host that way anyway, so I doubt this will cause a big amount of Damage to the total count of Servers in the end. It does suck for you Guys if this is true. But I can't help asking why you are complaining. You can't complain about already paying for a Server, if your not fully using it, claiming you could run 4 copies of Black Ops on it, I don't understand why your paying for a Server like that in the first Place. If you are using it, nothing will change for you, keep using it for what your using it and get Servers from the Provider, it isn't a big Deal. Especially not at the Prices some people are claiming they pay and what these Servers are supposedly going to cost. The only Problem I can see here is testing Mods (and if it happens Maps) without a Server, but I'm sure there will be some kind of Workaround.
Soooo, what do we do now?
First off, you all need to calm down. Nearly nothing is confirmed, this is all stuff we are hearing from others and alot of you are spreading Information you don't really have or didn't understand to the fullist. I'm not defending anybody here or telling you to not complain. What I am saying however is this:
If I draw a Picture for instance and announce I will be coloring it in shades of Blue and you all flame me saying you want it in Green, I wouldn't care. First of all, because your flaming me, second, because I want it in Green. If you want any chance at changing anything, you have to be ready to look for a compromise and not act like the little Kid who's Mother won't buy him the Toy he wants. Also, you are not entitled to anything. It is true that FPS have their Roots in the PC Community, but we're not talking about a old Friend here, even if you would like to see it that way. These are Companies and they are interested in Money. Even giving you what they are giving you isn't really worth it considering that most of their monetary Gain comes from the Consoles while the PC just causes extra work. You Guys should show a little gratitude for what your getting offered here for starts, regardless if you got more in the past or not. The PC Community was also the single Child of the FPS up until the latest Console Generation. Your not a single Child anymore, you have to deal with that and not always expect to be treated better, which you are. You all simply need to Calm down, turn your Brains on and try to reason with Treyarch and Activision, because right now, you really are just acting like that snotty Kid that isn't getting whatever it wants. Sorry to tell you that.

quote: IGN recently had an interview with Jay Wilson about where Diablo 3 is in development. Here is what Jay Wilson had to say
Quote from Jay Wilson (Source)Were trying to build up all the content to enough of a point where we can get into polishing. We have good examples of what does it look like for monsters when were at ship level, what does it look like for classes, what does it look like for items, we have the answers to those questions, but theres still some story and questing stuff thats not hitting the quality level that we want, so those are the things were working on.
Jay Wilson has basically said this in a few of the Gamescom interviews, but this is a more in-depth view from him. Its good to see that some parts of the game are finished, or at least they are at shippable quality. The quests seem to be the last thing that the D3 devs are going to work on. Granted, they more than likely have been working on them for the entire project, but they havent found the right rhythm for the quests. At least, that is what it sounds like. Jay Wilson has mentioned before that the Diablo 3 team was working on polishing act 1 so they would have an idea of how to tackle the rest of the acts. Its not clear if this was successful, but never fret, Jay Wilson has more to say

quote: It cant be an easy job, building on what could happily be called the biggest gaming franchise currently in existence. But the team at Treyarch do have one big idea theyre adding to the Call of Duty formula. Its simple, its time-tested, and its so obvious that youve got to wonder why it wasnt in the last one. Its gambling.
